Umm al-Jimal is an ancient black basalt city located in northern Jordan, near the Syrian border. It offers a unique and dramatic setting for filmmakers with its well-preserved ruins, including houses, towers, and churches. The dark volcanic stone used in its construction contrasts sharply with the surrounding landscape, creating a visually striking environment.

Umm El-Jimal is approximately 85 kilometers (about 53 miles) northeast of Amman. By car, the drive typically takes around 1.5  depending on traffic and road conditions.

  • Archaeological Site: Since Umm al-Jimal is a protected archaeological site, filming permits must be obtained from the Department of Antiquities. You may also need additional clearances for any alterations or significant equipment setup.

 

Access and Transport:

  • Road Access: The site is accessible by paved roads, but some parts may be rough, especially closer to the ruins. It's advisable to use 4x4 vehicles for transporting equipment and crew.
